Pocono Mountain Ski Areas and
Skiing
As you might expect, skiing in the
Pocono Mountains in PA is very popular due to the convenient
location and the excellent ski conditions that exist most of
the year from December through early March.
There are several ski areas located throughout the Pocono
Mountain area. Most of their names will be very familiar to any
skiers from northern New Jersey, Pennsylvania or central New
York state and New York City. They are Alpine Mountain Ski and
Ride Center, Blue Mountain Ski area, Sno Mountain, Camelback
Mountain Resort, Big Boulder Ski area, Jack Frost Mountain,
Shawnee Mountain, and Big Bear at Masthope Mountain.
The Pocono Mountains are an excellent choice for skiing
since this variety of ski areas presents all sorts of terrain
for all levels of ski experience and ability. If your thing is
skiing, snowboarding, snow tubing or cross country skiing, you
can find exactly what you desire in north eastern
Pennsylvania's Pocono Mountains.
The Camelback mountain resort is probably the largest and
most popular ski area in the Pocono Mountains. Camelback
offers 33 trails and 13 lifts at the time of this
writing. They also offer high speed quads, snowboard
halfpipe, two terrain parks and you will find ski trails for
skiers of all levels of ability and experience. Another
plus for Camelback is that they offer night skiing on all their
trails. Another draw to the Camelback area is their
convenient location. They are only a few minutes into
Pennsylvania from New Jersey and located just down the road
from the famous "Crossings Premium Outlets" at
Tannersville.
Another very popular ski area is located at Shawnee Mountain
which is just outside the village of Shawnee. This is a
very popular area first for its location since it is the
closest Pennsylvania ski area to New York City and New
Jersey. It is only a five minute drive from the Delaware
Water Gap crossing of route 80 into PA. But the Shawnee
Mountain ski area has earned its fine reputation with skiers
due to their excellent maintenance, snowmaking and snow
grooming of trails. They literally can make snow for
their entire trail system and most of that system is also well
lit for night skiing. Besides skiing, Shawnee offers
snowboarding, snow tubing at their park and they also have
added a 3000' Super Park and Half-Pipe.
